The Japanese Office Worker Whose Roblox Game Hit 2.8 Billion Plays
In 2023, a Japanese engineer named manato uploaded a simple game to Roblox: a giant head chases you through obstacle stages. Escape, or get flattened.
Today, Escape Running Head (顔から逃げるゲーム, “the game where you run from a face”) has over 2.8 billion visits — making it one of the most successful games ever made by a solo Japanese creator on any platform.
The numbers that changed a life
- End of 2023: 500 million visits
- End of 2024: 2.8 billion visits
- Monthly earnings crossed into the millions of yen — manato quit his engineering job to go full-time
- 2025: Won Roblox’s Best Experience award (Japan division), was featured by publisher Kodansha
Why a running head?
The genius is in the simplicity. There’s no tutorial to read, no meta to study — a huge head is chasing you and you run. That translates into every language on Earth, which is exactly why the game’s audience is mostly outside Japan: the US, Southeast Asia, Brazil.
Fun detail: the head is named Felipe, a name given by a fan of the YouTuber Flamingo. manato kept it as a thank-you to the community that made the game blow up.
The bigger story: Japan’s quiet Roblox invasion
manato isn’t alone. According to Roblox’s official Japan report, games made in Japan earn 57% of their creator revenue from overseas — Japanese creativity is already a Roblox export industry, even though most players have no idea where these games come from.
That’s the whole reason NinjaGG exists: to put a 🇯🇵 flag on the map.
